-farsightedness due to ciliary muscle weakness and loss of elasticity in the crystalline lens.
As a young girl growing up I had always wondered why people wore glasses. By the time I reached the 7th grade I found out why. My mother and I both had an eye exam appointment. I found out that I am nearsighted, with a stigmatism and my left eye is weaker than my right. My mom’s vision was worst than mines which caused her to get glasses. My mom moved to Atlantic City from Philadelphia while she was pregnant with me. Her first job was a front desk clerk at Bally’s and up until about 3 years ago was her only job. Her job description basically demanded her to in front of a computer screen all day. Our optometrist informed my mom that because of her job duties it caused her eye sight to worsen.
Today my mother’s eye sight is still pretty bad and she quite often misplaces her glasses. For her birthday this past May, I brought her 10 pairs of subscription reading glasses; I just hope she doesn’t misplace all of them. My mother needs to hold everything she reads at an arm’s length in order to focus properly. She even gets headaches at her new job because she still works in front of a computer. My mom knows that age related changes also take place in the muscles fibers surrounding the lens. With less elasticity the eye has a harder time focusing up close.
