After Images


An afterimage is an image that stays with you even after you have stopped looking at something. Below is a picture that creates and afterimage of the American flag.  If you stare at the cross at the center of the oddly colored flag for about 30 seconds, and then look away at a white surface you will see the correct colors of the American Flag.   This happens because of simultaneous color contrast, this occurs when an area or image is surrounded by a color that changes its appearance.  This usually happens with colors that are paired up or  are complementary, like green and red or blue and yellow.  When viewing a green image you will see a red after image, and when you view a red image you will see a green afterimage.
