Types of Symmetry

Body and face symmetry are known to predict human health. In the past, only animals were tested with symmetry for health concerns. Now, it is more common that we check for symmetrical alignments in humans, as well. There are two types of symmetry: Low symmetry and high symmetry. In low symmetry, there is a worse genetic, physical, and mental health associated with non-equal body parts. In high symmetry, it is likely to have more sexual partners and quicker access to romantic partners. More over, humans with a high symmetry have more equal body parts.

  1. Brianna,
This is very interesting. I have never heard of the high and low symmetry concepts. I also thought body parts were mostly symmetrical with only small differences. If the studying of human symmetry could help predict health we should be actively studying it.

  2. This is a great post! I found this very fascinating. Looking at the photos, it was almost hard for me to tell the difference. It is very interesting to me that there is a correlation between face symmetry and health. I enjoyed this article this was very cool.

  3. Brianna, I liked the picture you used as an example. It really showed the differences. I also think its so interesting how face symmetry reflects how attractive we find that person.

  4. Your picture was a perfect example of how subtle these differences can be but we still notice them. I never knew there were actual names for these concepts but I definitely noticed them every day. I thought it was just me noticing these little things but it is really interesting to know that others experience see it and have conducted research studies on it as well!
